CheckMate Winery Opens Kundig‑Designed Pop‑Up

2017/07/31

On July 29, CheckMate Artisanal Winery unveiled “The Installation,” a pop-up tasting room designed by architect Tom Kundig. Overlooking Okanagan Valley on CheckMate’s Oliver, BC winery, this compact structure features perforated metal shutters that lift to reveal a tasting room within. Designed as a moveable installation, the pop-up can be transported to any of the von Mandl Family Estates wineries in the Okanagan region, including Mission Hill Family Estates and Martin’s Lane Winery.

The pop-up will be used for special events and tastings at CheckMate while the main winery buildings are under construction – a remodel and expansion Olson Kundig is also leading. As architect Tom Kundig notes, “This pop-up is designed to raise the public awareness and consciousness of wine in the Okanagan Valley, a region which Anthony von Mandl has steadily been working to transform into the wine capitol of Canada. The design and materiality of the pop-up are in keeping with the spirit of CheckMate, which produces high quality yet unpretentious wines.”
