“If you feel as though you’ve become the best, you will fall behind in an instant.”
Olson Kundig’s Managing Director of Interiors since 2012, Naomi Mason is known for her inquisitive nature and rigorous pursuit of design excellence. With over three decades of experience in interior design and space planning, Naomi has established a reputation for excellence in civic design – her innovative use of systems furniture helped lead the industry toward solutions for rapidly changing technology. She has worked on a wide range of project types over the course of her career, including high-end residences and condo remodels, state-of-the art office buildings, sport stadiums, entertainment venues, hospitality projects, and custom aircraft and watercraft. At Olson Kundig, she designs space plans, programming and custom interiors for workspace, residential, multi-unit housing and cultural projects.
Naomi brings a quietly ambitious leadership style and work ethic to all of her projects, where her high standards and focused risk-taking are balanced by her belief that change is the only constant. This rigor emerged from Naomi’s years of experience working with high-expectation clients, but one gets the sense that the highest expectations come from Naomi herself. “If you feel as though you’ve become the best,” she explains, “you will fall behind in an instant.”
A graduate of the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design, Naomi also studied as a pre-med student. Her fascination with the human body, how it moves through space, and its performance extends to Naomi’s athletic pursuits – she competes in triathlons and marathons. For Naomi, this is a direct extension of her approach to interior design work. As she puts it, “I’m interested in how design can relate to the human body at all scales – from fine tactile details, to planning for large projects. I’m in pursuit of excellence in designing for people in space.”
